NEW MEXICO – Demi Lovato opened up about her difficult connection with her late father, Patrick Lovato.

On Father’s Day, the singer turned to Instagram to express her feelings. “I’m trying not to wake up depressed… Trying to maintain a good attitude. Today is always a challenge.

“This is for anybody else who has lost a parent, can’t be with their father, didn’t know their father, or had a difficult connection with their father,” they added. “I spent many years on this holiday debating whether or not to contact him… take it from me, if you can, call him.”

“Sometimes I regret not calling, but other times I’m proud of myself for maintaining my boundaries since I was doing what was best for me and my mental health. It’s complicated, and I wish that weren’t, but it’s what made me the person I am today,” Lovato said. “In any case, my heart goes out to those who are still maintaining their boundaries.”

Lovato’s father died in 2013. The Heartbreak crooner told all about their father’s passing in a 2015 video.

“When he died, I was really conflicted since he was abusive,” she added. “He was cruel, but he genuinely wanted to be a decent guy. And he wanted to have a family, and when my mom married my stepdad, he still had this enormous heart and said, ‘I’m so pleased he’s taking care of you and doing the job that I wish I could do.'”
