As part of its Digital Pakistan programme, Pakistan is preparing to introduce a single emergency helpline, known as ‘PEHEL-911,’ which will serve as a single point of contact for all emergencies.
Officials from the Ministry of Information Technology have finalized plans to consolidate all emergency response lines into a single helpline 911, according to the facts of the story.
According to the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), the pilot project is being carried out in collaboration with the Digital Pakistan initiative of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (IT&T). The pilot project will be launched in Islamabad first, with a backup location in Lahore.
Syed Aminul Haq, Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunications has stated that his ministry and the Ministry of Interior will collaborate on an initiative to provide unified and one-window access to call emergency services.
It was he who said,
While we will provide technical support and develop the backend infrastructure, the Interior Ministry will ensure its implementation by forging coordination among various emergency response services at the federal and provincial level[s].
